The American Academy of Pediatrics, the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s health, seeks a part-time Staff Writer (22.5 hours per week) within the Division of News, Media and Public Relations. We are seeking a strong, creative and persuasive journalist to write and edit for various public audiences, including parents, our membership and the news media.
This role will research, write and edit news releases, web articles, blog posts and other content from Pediatricians, letters-to-the-Editor, member communications, talking points, scripts, and social media posts. Interpret and translate medical studies, technical reports and AAP policies into news worthy stories for the public. In addition, this position will research and develop content in response to crisis situations, respond to media inquiries, and staff the press room at AAP conferences.
Qualified applicants will possess a Bachelor’s degree in education, journalism, public relations, communications or a related field, with at least two to three years of experience writing and editing in journalistic and persuasive writing styles. Experience writing for various audiences, including public and professional audiences is required, preferably in the health care field. Knowledge of Associated Press writing style is essential; video experience is helpful. Some weekend work and travel may be required.
