Lunch With a Lawyer: Fair Use For Editors in Today’s Digital Age
Is it okay to use that image from Flickr? Repost that video from YouTube? Take a segment of that video for your own video? Is your article summary a copyright violation? Who really owns that image, video, or synopsis? How and when should you get a license to use others’ content? What is “fair use” and when should you rely on it in these situations? (Hint: It’s not nearly as much as you’d think.)
Kevin M. Goldberg, a Member at Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth, P.L.C., will provide some answers at a lunchtime session sponsored by the Washington, DC, Chapter of the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE). Goldberg, who focuses on First Amendment and intellectual property issues, will offer enlightenment on copyright matters encountered by content creators and users.
Join your journalism colleagues for lunch on Wednesday, November 30, at 11 a.m., at the National Association of Realtors, 500 New Jersey Avenue, NW. The session is $20 for ASBPE members and $25 for nonmembers. Lunch is included in the registration fee.
