At her address at the ASBPE National Awards banquet, Julia Homer spoke about what she believes is the most important thing to keep in mind as a journalist and what it takes to be a leader in a B2B editorial setting.

Julia Homer: It is especially, more than ever, to develop your brand, to be the master of all media. And if you’re going to be a leader in your organization, again I think back to what the first publisher of CFO said to me, and this guy was a CPA, but he was also a brilliant salesperson, as it happened, and what he said was: “All that matters is what’s in it for them. What’s in it for your audience? Why should they give a damn about what you write?”
And that has to be the focus of everything you write; you have to always keep that in mind. He drilled that into me; I drilled it into everybody I came into contact with.
And then finally the last thing I wanted to say was, I fell into the job.
