(August 2003) The American Society of Business Publication Editors is the latest member of the Council of National Journalism Organizations.
The CNJO helps its member organizations advance training opportunities, advocate for high ethical practices, and coordinate public policy initiatives in the field of journalism. It also promotes discussions of best practices among its members for strengthening their organization’s management.
The group, meeting on the campus of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Evanston, Ill., voted unanimously on May 4 to recognize ASBPE as a member.
Launched in 1991 as the Council of Presidents of National Journalism Organizations, the group is changing its name to the Council of National Journalism Organizations to reflect the growing diversity of the group’s members (not all are presidents).
The addition of ASBPE brings the group’s membership ranks to 43, including the Society of Professional Journalists, American Society of Newspaper Editors, American Society of Magazine Editors, and Radio-Television News Directors Association.
Other members are Investigative Reporters and Editors, Associated Press Managing Editors, Society of Business Editors and Writers, and National Society of Newspaper Columnists.
“Having a seat at the table with these other organizations adds to the resources we can offer our members for their professional development,” said Robert Freedman, ASBPE president. “It also provides ASBPE more opportunities to partner with other organizations, ultimately to offer a richer mix of programs for editors of business publications.”
Among other programs, the CNJO is developing an online clearinghouse of journalism training programs around the country and is working with a foundation to bring training programs into publication offices to help editors and reporters enhance their skills without having to attend off-site classes.
