Medical Copy Editor—American Academy of Pediatrics

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s health, seeks a Medical Copy Editor within our Division of Editorial and Production Services. This individual will provide copyediting and proofreading services for AAP publishing efforts for select medical, clinical, and practice management manuals, textbooks, and journal manuscripts using AMA style. This position will also manage the quality control process of freelance copyeditors and proofreaders while reporting to the Manager of Editorial Services.

This role will be responsible for copyediting medical, clinical, and practice management manuals, textbooks, and journal manuscripts such as Pediatrics in Review, NeoReviews, and AAP Grand Rounds, for consistency with AAP policies, procedures, and style. Serve as copyeditor for print and electronic formats, including verifying reference citations, gathering information for permission requests, coordinating editors’ comments, and proofreading various formats.

Qualified applicants will possess a Bachelors’ degree in English, journalism, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required. A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as a medical copyeditor required, along with proficiency implementing AMA Manual of Style requirements. Previous experience working in a medical association is preferred. Ability to complete tasks independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously is required. Knowledge of publication development and medical terminology is required. Some travel, evening, and weekend work may be required.
